The Total Hits report shows the
number of requests for files - or "hits" - logged during the specified
report period. A "hit" is a request to your web server for a file such
as a web page, bitmap, CGI, or header request. If a visitor requests
a page containing two images, the web server logs three hits: one hit
for the page, and two for the image files.
The Total Hits report can help you spot trends in your
Web site's traffic. For example, you can use a monthly or quarterly
report to test whether an advertising campaign is paying off. An increase
in hits during this period indicates that more people are visiting your
site and that the campaign is effective.
You can also use weekly and daily reports to identify
hours of high or low traffic on your site. A low-traffic period is an
ideal time to schedule maintenance or make changes to the content of
the site.
This report can also help you project future bandwidth
or server requirements. If the report indicates that hits are increasing,
you may require more bandwidth, a faster server, or both.
Note: Since a "refresh"
or "reload" results in a request to your web server, LiveStats counts
it as another hit.
Note: Hits do not provide
an accurate estimate of page views or visitors. One visitor may
request many pages and each page request may result in a number of hits.
